anyone see the article....
in the NYT's this week about this family giving away all their possessions (or I guess most of them) and moving to Vermont to be homesteaders? The concept that possessions possess you has always struck a nerve with me. And reading this sort of made me want to sell everything. Except of course for my computer and books and iPod and coffee maker and bed and... how about you? What do you think of voluntary simplicity? Have any fantasies about selling it all or downsizing?
Share your thoughts on that AND what you ate for breakfast (I'm still interested!).
P.S. Do you twitter? I do now but I don't really know how to Do it...
UPDATE on the twitter thing: Any of you who twitter, I invite you to FOLLOW me. (I think that's the official language of twitterdom.) My twitter is here: gailstwitter. And if you don't twitter and want to, I'll send you an invite!

Sometimes it sounds so wonderful, but I think it would be difficult in the end. I can't even get rid of books I know I won't read again, let alone the big stuff. I admire people who can lead a simpler life, though.
I agree booklady and welcome! In fact after I posted that I kept thinking of more things I'd need like my running shoes and my yoga mat and of course my son would need all this Little League equipment and...
Oh, we'll get you twittering up a storm at Pilcrow. Watch the Common Craft Twitter video for a primer.
(and send me an @leahjoesn so I can be sure to add you)

Leah! You're my savior! Okay, so send you a follow?? Is that it? I'll try it and see if it works... you get a prize (I'll bring it to Pilcrow!). See you soon...
Gail, let me clarify about my breakfast. I have that coffee first thing, almost as I roll out of bed. Then we run around getting the tot and dog fed, etc and then I do eat breakfast. It just might be 45 minutes later. I've always been a breakfast person--it's my favourite meal of the day. Given a choice, I would always be eating pancakes, waffles, French toast, etc, all with lots of syrup and berries but I try to restrain myself. But these days it's usually cereal and berries. I'm looking for the ultimate tasty-with-high-protein cereal. And I love oatmeal and Red River cereal too.
Look! Now my comment is longer than your blog.

Oh, and re selling all our possessions, we can't even seem to have a garage sale, though we sorely need one.
thanks for clarifying that, Danielle. I feel better knowing you're nourished in the morning! The ultimate cereal, huh? I'd like to know that, too! I'm thinking maybe Caroline's granola recipe (that she said she'd share with us!) might be the ticket...
and I get what you're saying about the possession thing but does anyone else have fantasies of having only what you need?

I have the occasional daydream of selling up and moving to Vanuatu. Where? Exactly. And it was listed as the happiest place on the planet:

Gail, I'm trying to follow you on twitter but it keeps telling me "something went wrong!" SO maybe you can find me there yourself and follow me?
Granola coming soon, I promise!
Granola coming soon, I promise!
yes, Monica that's exactly what I'm talking about moving to a place like Vanuatu. Did I spell that right?
Hi Caroline, I got your twitter and I FOLLOWED you... not sure what that means but am excited for the granola recipe!

I don't think I am selling everything any time soon so you can catch me on Twitter as Texasholly whenever I am out and about on my phone. See, that whole downsizing thing would probably have to include the phone wouldn't it?
Good to have found you. We live relatively simply---we try not to acquire new stuff. But then there's the old stuff that seems to move from one pile to the next. We have tons of books--kind of like old friends, and stuff that makes me smile. These I keep.
I don't do the social networking a la twitter, facebook and the like. It's just feels weird. And at my house, call waiting is a busy signal...

Debra welcome! You're a winner!! I have great gifts to send to commenters and you qualify!
And tell me more about your barley soup...
And tell me more about your barley soup...
Thanks, Gail. I'll email you my address. About barley soup: I don't really have a recipe since I rarely use them. I think I used broth, onion, carrots, potatoes, celery and barley in the crockpot. Don't remember what else I put in. It IS good, though...
